5 Ways to Increase Milk Supply

One thing we all know and have experienced (most of us anyways) is the feeling as if we aren’t producing enough or worrying that our babies aren’t getting enough of our Mommy milk. We’ve all had the comments from others that make us question our bodies and their ability to nourish our babies, the comments like “Is She/he really eating again?”, “Baby has been attached to you for a long time, is that normal?”, and the “Why does your baby eat so often?” and there are many, many more comments that make us question and worry. So before I start with ways to increase our supplies I want to reassure some of you and let you know what is in the normal range, cause we all know normal isn’t the same for every baby.

It is normal for your newborn baby to eat pretty much ALL the time! as long as they are getting 6 or more wet/ poopy diapers and it can take them up to at least 2 weeks to get back to their normal birth weight. They have tiny tiny tummies and on top of that breastmilk digests faster than formula cause their little bodies are made to digest breastmilk, so typical breast fed newborn will eat any where from every 30 minutes to 3 hrs. Then we have the random growth spurts where they start to cluster feed and feed all the time that people  don’t always tell you about and THEY ARE NORMAL and they will pass in a few days just keep feeding. When baby is a bit older like 2+ months as long as they are gaining weight and having 6+ wet/poopy diapers YOU ARE MAKING ENOUGH! Well lets get on to some ways to INCREASING your supply!

1. INCREASE DEMAND

Breastfeeding is all about SUPPLY and DEMAND. The more your body thinks it needs to produce, the more it will produce. Pumping after feeding baby will tell your body baby needs more milk. This way may take a few days but you will notice an increase in supply if you keep at it. Also Power pumping pump for 15 min stop for 10 min then pump again then stop do this for 2 hrs and it will act as if baby is cluster feeding and help trigger your body to produce more.

2. Suppliments

My Favorite one is Fenugreek its inexpensive and you see results fairly quickly! WARNING: YOU WILL SMELL LIKE MAPLE SYRUP ( that’s how you know you are taking enough!). I have found that the best dosage for me that shows results over night which is 2-3 capsules 3 times a day. A few other supplements that have been known to improve supply are brewers yeast and flax seed. Mothers milk tea is another good one that some people like, I cant stand the taste of it myself it tastes like black licorice. So if you like Black licorice, Mothers milk tea is awesome at helping improve supply!

3. STAY HYDRATED!

Its is very important that you drink enough fluids! A good rule of thumb is to drink a glass of water ever time you nurse, and keeping a water bottle with you at all times is a good idea. You don’t have to drink only water either juice, tea or whatever you prefer works too as long as you are staying Hydrated it will help you keep you supply up. I’ve noticed when I drink more water than I usually do during the day and through the night then by the next morning I am engorged and leaking!

 

4. Foods that Increase supply!

Certain foods are known to increase supply such as oatmeal, nuts ,dried fruits, dark leafy veggies and carrots are just a few I can think of off the of my head. One of my favorite though is Lactation Cookies! I mean who doesn’t love cookies? My favorites are oatmeal chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin! Mmmm! Good thing about lactation cookies is everyone can eat them too! Heres a Recipe!

Ingredients

3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1 1/2 cups  all-purpose flour
5 tablespoons brewers yeast
3 tablespoons ground flaxseed
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
12 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons unrefined organic virgin coconut oil
1 1/2 cups  sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cup chocolate chips/chunks (I like toll house)

You can also open up 4-5 capsules of fenugreek and add that too for the extra boost!

Directions:

Preheat the oven the 350 degrees F.

In a large bowl, Mix together the oats, flour, yeast, flaxseed, baking powder, soda, and salt.

In the bowl, beat the butter and coconut oil on medium speed until creamy. Add in the sugar and beat on medium to high speed until fluffy, about 5 minutes, scraping down the sides of the bowl when needed. Add in the eggs, beating until combined, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add in the vanilla extract and beat until combined again.  Gradually add in the dry ingredients, beating on low speed until just combined and mixed. Stir in the chocolate chips with a spatula until they are evenly dispersed.

Scoop the dough into 1-inch rounds ( use an ice cream scoop) and place on a baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10 to 14 minutes, or until the bottoms are just golden!

5. Feed on demand!

Exactly as it is! DON”T watch the CLOCK! Feed baby as soon as baby shows signs of being hungry. Let baby comfort nurse! as long as baby is suckling its telling your body that it needs to produce more milk!
